A Lesson in Cruelty opens with Anna preparing to leave prison, only to wake beside a new cellmate whose throat has been cut. Covered in blood and carrying the woman’s hidden phone, she walks free with one question pulling her away from the life she planned to end.
The story widens to Lucy, an Oxford student fixated on her married professor, and Marie, a convicted murderer whose possible release has reopened an old wound. I found the three separate strands genuinely intriguing, particularly as Anna’s search gives her a reason to keep going when she believes she deserves nothing.
Harriet Tyce is very good at making everyone seem guilty of something, even when it is not the crime we expect. The prison scenes are especially strong, but the real hook is watching punishment, revenge and forgiveness become tangled together. Dark, tense and cleverly joined, it kept changing who I trusted.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Anna wants a fresh start after three long years behind bars, a chance to step back into the world without being dragged by what came before.
Lucy is fixed on the attention of the one man she cannot have, her alluring Oxford professor, and the wanting has started to shape her days.
Marie has lived too long as a recluse, hemmed in by someone else’s rules, until staying hidden no longer feels like safety.
When these three strangers stumble into an elaborate web of lies, they find a dead body at the centre of it, waiting like a truth no one planned to meet. What each of them longs for begins to look costly, and the bargains they thought they were making shift under their feet.
The question is not only what they have found, but what it will ask of them, and whether there will be time to step back.
