Marabou Stork Nightmares

Irvine Welsh’s Marabou Stork Nightmares is one of the bleakest and most inventive novels I’ve read. Roy Strang lies in a coma, retreating into a colonial adventure where he hunts a monstrous bird with his companion, Sandy Jamieson. As reality keeps breaking through, that absurd fantasy becomes a hiding place from the violence he has suffered and inflicted.

I found the shifting structure disorientating at first, but once the pieces began fitting together, it became impossible to look away. Welsh uses Scots, fractured typography and grotesque humour to pull us through Roy’s childhood, football hooliganism and increasingly desperate attempts to rewrite his own guilt.

This is an exceptionally dark novel, with graphic sexual violence, abuse and cruelty, but none of it feels comfortable or celebratory. Furious, challenging and psychologically brutal, it asks whether understanding how someone became monstrous can ever lessen responsibility for what they did.
