Sworn Soldier – What Feasts at Night is a quiet, unsettling horror story that rewards patience and attention.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Alex Easton returns to Gallacia expecting little more than a quiet obligation. The journey is meant as a favour to Miss Potter, a renowned British mycologist, but the family estate greets them with unease. The house stands empty, the caretaker lies dead, and an unnatural stillness presses in from the surrounding land. Locals refuse to speak of what happened, and none will cross the property’s boundary.
In Sworn Soldier, reason offers little comfort. Tales of a breath stealing creature from Gallacian folklore seem easy to dismiss, yet Easton’s nights are soon fractured by violent dreams and unsettling disturbances within the house. Each passing day erodes their certainty, as the familiar landscape of home begins to feel hostile and changed.
As the truth behind the caretaker’s death surfaces, Easton is forced to face a presence tied to old stories and older wrongs. Justice, it seems, is demanded by both the living and the dead, and the house will not release its hold until it is paid.
