Overview

Ekata is the youngest daughter of the Duke of Kylma Above and never expected to rule. When her entire family is struck by a sudden curse, she becomes the Winter Duke overnight. Surrounded by rivals and quiet threats in a frozen court, Ekata must protect her people while uncovering the truth behind the magic that trapped her family and bound her fate to the lake beneath the palace.

Writing & Voice

We found Claire Bartlett’s writing clear, controlled and purposeful. The prose stays restrained, which suits a story built on strategy and political pressure rather than spectacle. The cold setting is felt throughout, and the focus remains firmly on choices and consequences.

Characters

Ekata is a thoughtful and capable lead whose strength lies in observation rather than force. Watching her grow into authority is deeply satisfying. Her relationship with Inkar brings warmth and trust into an otherwise isolating role. The wider cast supports the political tension, even when some remain more functional than personal.

Themes

This novel explores power, responsibility and leadership rooted in care rather than dominance. It questions tradition, succession and who is allowed to rule. The queer romance is woven naturally into the story, reinforcing the idea that identity and politics cannot be separated.

What Worked

  • Strong protagonist: Ekata’s intelligence and restraint make her compelling.
  • Court intrigue: Political manoeuvring drives the story without confusion.
  • Atmosphere: The frozen palace and lake setting feel symbolic and distinct.

Minor Quibbles

  • The middle section slows as political detail takes precedence.
  • A few side characters could have used more personal depth.

Final Thoughts

Calm, thoughtful and quietly powerful, The Winter Duke is a political fantasy that values intelligence and empathy over force. We enjoyed its focus on leadership through care, and Ekata’s journey from overlooked daughter to capable ruler makes this a rewarding standalone read.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

We recommend this to readers who enjoy character driven fantasy, court politics and stories where strength comes from restraint rather than spectacle.
