Estella’s Revenge
Overview
Estella’s Revenge retells the story of Estella from Great Expectations, giving her a voice and a future shaped by her own choices. Raised to be cold and untouchable, Estella reflects on her past and the damage done by Miss Havisham and the world of privilege she was forced to inhabit. Set among foggy marshes and crumbling houses, the story follows Estella as she seeks control, justice and a way forward after years of harm.
Writing & Voice
We found the writing rich and heavy with mood. Barbara Havelocke leans into a dark, gothic tone, focusing closely on Estella’s inner life. The language is careful and descriptive, drawing attention to setting and emotion. At times the intensity rarely eases, which can make the book feel weighty, but the voice remains clear and purposeful.
Characters
Estella is firmly at the centre of the novel. She is sharp, damaged and self aware, shaped by cruelty but not defined by it. Miss Havisham’s influence hangs over every decision, while Drummle represents the violence and entitlement Estella must escape. Some secondary characters feel less developed, but Estella’s perspective holds the story together.
Themes
This book explores revenge, identity and the long reach of trauma. It asks what freedom looks like for a woman raised to be a weapon rather than a person. Anger, survival and self determination drive the story, showing how pain can be confronted rather than buried.
What Worked
- Strong atmosphere: the gothic setting feels vivid and well imagined.
- Fresh focus: placing Estella at the centre gives the story new direction.
- Emotional honesty: the novel does not soften the effects of abuse and control.
Minor Quibbles
- The tone stays dark throughout, which can feel draining over long stretches.
- Some supporting characters lack depth compared to Estella.
- Readers hoping for humour or lightness from the original may find this much heavier.
Final Thoughts
Estella’s Revenge is a brooding and thoughtful retelling that gives a familiar character space to reclaim her story. While the mood can be intense and uneven at times, the focus on Estella’s survival and agency makes this a compelling, if challenging, read.
