The Silent Daughter begins when Maria Morrison is found critically injured on the steps of Edinburgh’s Fleshmarket Close. Her husband Chris, an experienced reporter, refuses to accept that she simply fell, especially when their travelling daughter Ruth cannot be reached.
Chris is difficult, suspicious and often unfair, but his determination kept me reading as every family member revealed another lie. I particularly liked the anonymous passages woven between chapters, where a hidden voice recalls Ruth’s childhood with an intimacy that feels loving and increasingly disturbing. Even small details, such as the cracked family photograph on Maria’s phone, carry a sense of something broken long before the accident.
Emma Christie uses Edinburgh’s closes, hospital corridors and newspaper offices to build a tense family mystery around identity, guilt and the damage caused by silence. Cleverly structured and emotionally messy, this kept changing who I trusted until the truth finally came together.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Chris Morrison’s life fractures without warning. His wife lies unconscious in hospital. His daughter has vanished. Between these two events sits a silence that feels deliberate, as if something long buried has begun to surface.
As hours stretch into days, Chris is forced to confront the uneasy sense that these crises are not separate. The past presses in through small details and unanswered questions, testing the trust that once held his family together. What he thought he knew begins to thin, replaced by the suspicion that loyalty and love can conceal as much as they protect.
This psychological thriller turns its attention inward, tracing how secrecy moves through a family and alters its shape. Set close to the emotional ground, it asks what is passed down, what is withheld, and how far a person might go to keep the truth from those they love.
