25 Library Terrace is a quietly powerful novel we admired for its emotional restraint, its attentiveness to place, and its honest portrayal of grief without easy answers.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Have you ever wondered who lived in your house before you, and what they carried with them.
At 25 Library Terrace in Edinburgh, lives intersect across more than a century. In 1911, Ursula Black arrives and finds herself drawn into women’s suffrage, census protest and new ideas about how to live, while learning the quiet difficulty of raising children who are not her own.
By 1931, the house is part of a radical experiment in shared living, and a long held family secret begins to surface. In 2011, Tess Dutton comes to the address in the aftermath of a broken relationship, taking a room from a landlady who is not quite what she expects.
In 2022, with Scotland’s census delayed and the city gathering again, the stories held within the house begin to align. This is literary fiction attentive to time, place and the way ordinary lives leave lasting traces.
