Morvern Callar follows a young woman in a remote Scottish town who, after discovering her boyfriend’s body, conceals his death and adopts his unpublished manuscript as her own. As she drifts through grief, money and escape, her life quietly unravels. For readers of dark, character-driven literary fiction exploring detachment, identity and moral ambiguity.

As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Off season in a remote Highland sea port, twenty one year old Morvern Callar works for low pay in the local supermarket, living a life that feels small and edged by weather. One morning she wakes to find her boyfriend dead on their kitchen floor, his suicide turning the flat into a place she cannot quite recognise.
Morvern’s reaction is laconic, unsettling, and difficult to read. Grief does not arrive in the expected shapes, and what she does with the fact of his death is stranger still. The choices she makes in the aftermath feel both intriguing and immoral, as if she is testing what can be carried, what can be hidden, and what it means to keep going when the person beside you has stopped.
The story holds its tension in what Morvern refuses to explain, and in the quiet, appalling steps that follow.
