On the rugged isle of Muckle Flugga, life is shaped by weather and rock, and by the narrow company it allows. The elements run riot, and even the stones that hold the place together seem to shift under their influence. The only permanent inhabitants are the lighthouse keeper, known as The Father, and his otherworldly son, Ouse, along with the occasional lodger taken in to keep the wolf from the door.

When Firth arrives from Edinburgh, a chaotic writer, the fragile balance begins to change. His presence tests the bonds of family and tradition, and brings a new kind of pressure into a world built on routine and necessity. A tug of war grows between Firth and The Father for Ouse’s affections, and for the shape of the life he might have.

As old and new ways collide and decisions loom, the island becomes a place where futures can tip, and where the tides may leave very little standing.
