In the tiny Highland village of Locharran, Ally McKinley has finally opened the guesthouse she has dreamed of, in a lovingly restored old malthouse. Recently retired, she is settling into a quieter life, getting to know the locals and the mountain rhythms, and making a new kind of home for herself.
Then her first paying guest is found dead in her cobblestoned courtyard, a dagger in his back. Wilbur Carrington, an American tourist and amateur genealogist, believed he was the rightful Earl of Locharran, and he had plans that would put people out of jobs and even out of their homes. With the police baffled, Ally’s instincts pull her into the investigation, whether she should be there or not.
With her Labrador puppy Flora at her side, she begins to make careful enquiries, following the fault lines the death has exposed. A faded photograph hidden in Wilbur’s room offers a new lead, and then a second death makes the danger feel closer. In Locharran, the past is never far away, and neither is the motive to protect what you have.
