Overview

In Caledonian Road, Andrew O’Hagan takes us deep into modern London, following a wide cast of characters whose lives brush up against wealth, power, and ambition. At the centre is Campbell Flynn, a successful writer and public figure whose comfortable life begins to unravel. As scandals break and private behaviour becomes public, the novel moves across streets, homes, and social circles, showing how money and influence shape the city and the people living inside it.

Writing & Voice

We found O’Hagan’s writing sharp, observant, and often darkly funny. He has a strong ear for dialogue and a clear eye for detail, especially when describing the small signals of status and class that define his characters. The voice feels confident and expansive, with room for satire as well as moments of real unease.

Characters

The novel is packed with characters from different backgrounds, and we move between artists, politicians, influencers, and those living closer to the edge. Campbell Flynn is flawed and often self absorbed, but that discomfort feels deliberate. Watching how people react when his position starts to crumble reveals much about loyalty, hypocrisy, and fear.

Themes

Caledonian Road looks closely at class, privilege, and the stories people tell themselves to stay in power. It explores public image, private failure, and the ways modern life turns reputation into currency. We were struck by how the book captures a city obsessed with success, while quietly showing the cost of that obsession.

What Worked

  • A vivid portrait of London that feels busy, divided, and alive.
  • Social satire that cuts close to real political and cultural tensions.
  • Ambitious scope that connects personal downfall with wider social systems.

Minor Quibbles

  • The large cast can feel overwhelming at times.
  • Some readers may find the central character difficult to warm to.

Final Thoughts

Caledonian Road is a bold and searching novel about modern London, where status protects some and exposes others.
