Young Adult Fantasy Steampunk Victorian Edinburgh

Overview

The Vanishing Throne continues the story of Aileana Kameron in an alternate Victorian Edinburgh overrun by fae. After the events of The Falconer, Aileana is dealing with grief, injury, and rising political tension as a fae civil war threatens both worlds.

Writing & Voice

We found the writing darker and more controlled than the first book. The pace remains fast, but the voice shows greater weight, reflecting Aileana’s exhaustion and anger as the consequences of earlier choices close in.

Content & Perspective

The story moves between street level violence and fae court politics. Aileana’s relationship with Kiaran deepens under strain, while questions of loyalty and power drive the plot forward. The stakes are broader and more dangerous throughout.

Themes

The Vanishing Throne explores grief, responsibility, and the cost of vengeance. It examines what happens after survival, when anger no longer sustains action and harder choices must be made.

What Worked

  • Expanded world building within the fae hierarchy.
  • Emotional follow through from the first book.
  • Rising political stakes alongside personal ones.

Minor Quibbles

  • The mythology grows complex quickly.
  • Some plot turns rely on prior series knowledge.

Final Thoughts

We found The Vanishing Throne heavier and more demanding, deepening grief and politics while forcing its heroine to confront consequences rather than simply survive on anger.

Rating: ★★★★☆ / 5

We recommend this to readers continuing the Falconer series who want higher stakes, deeper politics, and a more demanding emotional arc.
