Dark Encounters: A Collection of Ghost Stories

About this book

As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.

First published in 1963, Dark Encounters: A Collection of Ghost Stories brings together a set of eerie and finely judged tales rooted in the landscapes and histories of Scotland. These stories draw power from suggestion rather than spectacle, allowing unease to build slowly and linger long after the final page.

Many of the hauntings are tied to real places, objects and historical figures, lending them an unsettling sense of plausibility. A cursed book exerts deadly influence over its readers. A long dead feudal baron refuses to loosen his grip on the present. Each story explores how the past intrudes, often quietly, into everyday life.

Elegant in style and restrained in its horrors, Dark Encounters stands firmly within Scotland’s rich tradition of supernatural fiction. It is a collection for readers drawn to the uncanny and the inexplicable, where fear lies not in shock but in atmosphere, memory and the persistence of what should have remained buried.
