Our summary description
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
On the night before Donald Trump’s inauguration, a young woman looks through her boyfriend’s phone and discovers he is a prolific online conspiracy theorist, hidden behind layers of anonymity. The revelation does not shock her so much as confirm what she already knows about the internet’s appetite for performance, outrage, and belief without consequence.
Untethered from both relationship and place, she leaves New York for Berlin, drifting through a life structured by temporary connections and curated selves. Dating apps, expat gatherings, office spaces, and bureaucratic queues become stages where sincerity is optional and manipulation feels almost expected. The boundaries between irony and belief, truth and fabrication, grow increasingly unstable.
Fake Accounts is a sharp, unsettling novel about how identity is assembled and undone online. Funny and disquieting in equal measure, it captures the hollow freedom of a world where nothing needs to be true for it to feel real, and where detachment can masquerade as control until it begins to consume everything else.
