Claire Wilson’s Five by Five follows Kennedy Allardyce, an intelligence analyst inside a high-security Scottish prison. After stopping drugs entering through a visit, Kennedy is identified and brutally attacked. Returning to work, she becomes determined to uncover the corrupt insider known as Scout.
What gripped me was Kennedy’s growing inability to trust anyone. Prisoner Adrian Maddox is exploiting violence and contraband to seize control of his hall, while Kennedy’s investigation leads disturbingly close to Molly Rana, the officer she is secretly falling for. Their relationship gives the thriller real emotional weight, particularly as attraction, betrayal and fear become impossible to separate.
Fast, gritty and intensely claustrophobic, this is a brilliant crime debut with a perspective I had never encountered before. The prison feels alive with competing loyalties, rumours and hidden transactions, while Kennedy’s obsession makes every new clue feel increasingly dangerous.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Inside the prison, Kennedy Allardyce’s job is to watch. The most dangerous criminals may be locked up, but crime does not stop at the gate, and she is there to monitor not only the prisoners, but the staff who move among them.
When rumours surface of a corrupt guard with lethal influence, the work becomes more precarious. Kennedy begins to follow the thread, and realises too late that someone is watching her back. The sense of control she relies on starts to slip, replaced by the pressure of being noticed, and the fear of what a single mistake might cost.
Against that unease, one thing feels like relief: a blossoming relationship with Molly, a beautiful, enigmatic new guard. As the investigation tightens, trust becomes its own risk. Kennedy is left with a question she cannot easily ask aloud, even to herself. What if the killer she is hunting is the woman she is falling for.
