The Ghost Cat – 12 decades, 9 lives, 1 cat

About this book

As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.

Early one morning in 1902, in an Edinburgh tenement still heavy with soot and cold, a cat settles himself beside a newly lit fire. By nightfall, his life has ended. His presence has not. From that moment on, he remains, moving lightly through the same stairwells and rooms as decades pass and the city reshapes itself around him.

The Ghost Cat watches families arrive and depart, wars come and recede, habits change, and buildings age. He observes without judgment, attentive to grief, small kindnesses, and the quiet persistence of daily life. The tenement becomes a vessel for memory, holding traces of those who have lived there and those who have been forgotten.

Set in Edinburgh, The Ghost Cat is gently humorous and reflective, using a watchful, spectral narrator to explore time, loss, and continuity. The tone is light without being slight, grounded in place and observation. What lingers is not sadness, but companionship, and the sense that some presences, once formed, are not so easily dismissed.
