The Moon’s More Feeble Fire begins with the murder of Dutch Edie, a Soho prostitute whose death barely troubles Scotland Yard. Dr Jack Cuthbert refuses to treat her as disposable, and the case grows as more women are found with the same strange marks.
What drew me in was Cuthbert’s insistence that every victim mattered, even when the police had only a street name to put beside the body. Allan Gaw’s own pathology background gives the post-mortem work real detail, but it never overwhelms the people at the centre. The search through old records to return the women’s names to them was the part that stayed with me.
Set in 1930, this is an atmospheric historical mystery about class, drugs, prostitution and lives hidden in plain sight. Cuthbert’s private loneliness adds another layer, making him far more than the clever doctor solving the case.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Soho, 1930. The death of a prostitute barely registers at Scotland Yard, filed away as something expected and easily forgotten. But when a second similar murder surfaces, and then a third, the pattern forces itself into view.
Cuthbert and his team are drawn into a nightmarish world of people trafficking, prostitution and drug use, reaching far beyond the streets and into the habits of the upper classes. Each step of the investigation asks them to look harder at what is being protected, and who is being discarded.
Cuthbert brings all his forensic skills to a case that refuses to settle into sense. Clues fray, assumptions shift, and answers arrive late, if they arrive at all. Only a faded photograph offers a final way in, holding a tragic secret that has been waiting to be seen.
