In 2015, Stephen Rutt left a hectic life in London for the bird observatory on North Ronaldsay. From that small outpost he began to travel, following seabirds through the landscapes they claim and the histories they haunt. He asks what part they have played in our past, and what they continue to mean to us now, as familiar presences and distant strangers, both studied and half misunderstood.
