Our summary description
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
In the early 2000s, violence shapes the edges of everyday life across Glasgow and the housing schemes of Lanarkshire. Boys grow up defined by postcodes, loyalty learned early and reinforced with blades. This is the world Azzy Williams enters when he joins the Young Team, a decision that binds him to bravado, ritual, and an escalating feud that offers belonging at a brutal price.
In The Young Team, the years move forward unevenly. Street philosophy sits alongside fear. Music, drink, and adrenaline blur into routine. Injuries accumulate. Death becomes familiar. By 2012, Azzy begins to imagine another version of himself, one not built around constant readiness for violence. Wanting out proves harder than staying in.
The novel is rooted in place and voice, attentive to the rhythms of Scottish speech and the pressures that shape young lives long before choice feels possible. The Young Team does not look away from harm, but it also listens for doubt, exhaustion, and the fragile hope that a different future might still be fought for.
