She senses that something in her is different, whether born that way or forged by years of emotional deprivation.
Beyond the walls of the house, the world offers little gentler instruction. Estella witnesses the routine cruelty visited on women, lessons reinforced when she is bound in marriage to the violent Drummle. Survival becomes a daily calculation, and endurance begins to look uncomfortably like surrender.
