A lyrical historical novel where a minister sent to evict the last resident of a remote Scottish island finds compassion instead of conflict. Ideal for readers who enjoy atmospheric, humane tales of isolation and connection.

Clear is a subtle and moving novel that shows how quiet encounters can reveal deep truths about loss, power, and compassion.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Set in 1843 on a remote island north of Scotland, Clear begins with an unexpected encounter. Ivar, the island’s only remaining inhabitant, discovers an unconscious man washed up on the shore and carries him to safety. The stranger is John Ferguson, a struggling church minister sent to remove Ivar so the land can be cleared for sheep.
Ivar knows nothing of this purpose. Between the two men there is no shared language, yet daily acts of care and necessity draw them together. In isolation, a tentative understanding forms, shaped by weather, labour and silence.
On the mainland, John’s wife Mary waits anxiously for word, her life bound to decisions made far from her control. Clear is a quietly powerful novel about displacement, conscience and survival during the era of the Clearances. Rooted in landscape and history, it explores how ordinary lives are altered by forces they cannot escape, and how connection persists even in the harshest conditions.
