This novel follows two graduates who meet on 15 July 1988, revisiting their lives on the same date over the next twenty years as friendship and feelings evolve. Witty and heartfelt, it will appeal to readers of character driven fiction, poignant romance and stories about life’s unpredictable turns.

We found One Day tender and unsparing, using its annual snapshots to show how love and friendship are shaped as much by missed chances and timing as by devotion.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
On 15 July 1988, Dexter and Emma meet on the night of their graduation from the University of Edinburgh. They talk, wander the city, and share something neither is quite ready to name. By morning, they expect to part. Whatever this was, it belongs to a single day.
One Day returns to that date again and again, tracing where life has carried them twelve months on, then another year, and another. Their paths drift, collide, and stretch apart, shaped by ambition, disappointment, affection, and missed timing. What feels possible one summer night becomes harder to reach as adulthood settles in.
Set partly in Edinburgh and moving outward as the years pass, the novel is attentive to the small choices that accumulate into lives. It resists grand gestures in favour of gradual change, asking how well we ever really know the people who matter most to us. What endures is not certainty, but the pull of a shared beginning, and the quiet question of what might have been if one moment had tipped differently.
