Andrew Meehan’s Best Friends is a beautifully tender novel about two people discovering that loneliness does not have to be permanent. June is seventy-four, sharp-tongued and fiercely independent, while seventy-year-old Ray falls in love with people, animals and passing moments several times a day. When he buys her unwanted jars of honey, an unlikely friendship begins.
I loved how Meehan allows their relationship to grow through small things: cups of tea, awkward picnics, shared walks and the nervousness of letting someone into a life built around being alone. Both are funny and difficult in completely different ways, which makes their affection feel wonderfully real.
Warm, observant and quietly heartbreaking, Best Friends understands how much courage companionship can require later in life. It made me laugh, but beneath the humour is a moving reminder that being noticed by another person can change everything.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
June cleans houses. Ray works as a janitor at the public tennis courts in Dun Laoghaire. They are both over seventy, and neither of them has ever quite fitted where they were meant to.
Ray is not romantic material. June is not even sure she is friend material. He looks a bit like Willie Nelson, she looks a bit like Chrissie Hynde, and between them sits a lifetime of paths that seemed to close before they could be taken.
As unlikely companions, they begin with little expectation of each other, or of themselves. Yet slowly, through the awkward work of learning how to be with another person late in life, something opens. Understanding grows into friendship, and June and Ray find themselves rediscovering a joy they had gone too long without.
