We found Putting the Rabbit in the Hat bracing and grounded, a memoir that values work over myth. It is at its best when it talks plainly about what it takes to keep going in a difficult profession.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Brian Cox: Putting The Rabbit In The Hat is a memoir shaped by work, endurance, and a fierce refusal to be diminished by circumstance. Raised in Dundee after the early death of his father, Cox grew up in a household held together by his sisters while his mother’s illness cast a long shadow. Theatre arrived early and with force. By fifteen he had found his way to Dundee Rep, and with it a sense of purpose that never quite let go.
The book traces a life spent grafting rather than waiting to be discovered, moving through British repertory theatre, the RSC, and eventually film and television. Fame comes late, most recognisably through Succession, but it is treated here as consequence rather than destination.
Putting The Rabbit In The Hat is candid, dryly funny, and unsentimental about the business of acting. It is as much about discipline and survival as it is about success, attentive to the costs of a life lived in rehearsal rooms, on tour, and always in pursuit of the next honest performance.
