We finished this feeling the cold logic of a witch hunt, and the sharp cost of being a woman the system can afford to lose.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Scotland, 1589. Besse Craw is a young mother whose husband has mysteriously vanished, leaving her exposed in a world where women are powerless. She is accused of witchcraft, abused by her employer, and made to feel the ground give way beneath everything she is trying to protect. The threat is immediate and intimate: her daughter, her freedom, her life.
Set during the North Berwick Witch Trials, when many were persecuted, tortured and killed, the story places Besse inside a culture of suspicion where fear carries more weight than evidence. As she fights for justice and truth, she begins to uncover long held secrets, each one tightening the net rather than loosening it.
The question is not simply what happened to her husband, but what it costs to keep going when the truth offers no safe way out.
