Jane Flett’s Freakslaw is filthy, furious and unlike anything else I’ve read. When a travelling carnival arrives in the repressed Scottish town of Pitlaw, its performers offer local outsiders Ruth and Derek the possibility of escape. The townspeople, however, see only bodies, identities and desires that offend everything they consider normal.
I loved Flett’s wild, excessive writing. The fair feels alive with neon, sex, witchcraft and wonderfully grotesque characters, while Pitlaw is simmering with cruelty long before the visitors arrive. Beneath all the spectacle is a powerful story about finding family among people who refuse to make you smaller.
This is graphic, strange and deliberately confrontational, with violence, body horror and plenty of explicit sex. Queer, punk and gloriously unruly, Freakslaw turns marginalisation into power and gives its outsiders the bloody revenge fantasy they deserve.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
In the summer of 1997, the Scottish town of Pitlaw is itching for change. Its grey, repressed world is disturbed by the arrival of the Freakslaw, a travelling funfair of seductive troublemakers, deviant queers, a contortionist witch, a powerful fortune teller, and other architects of mayhem.
It does not take long for the fair to work its way into the town’s bloodstream. For Pitlaw’s teenagers, especially Ruth and Derek, the neon charms of the Freakslaw offer something the town has never known how to give them: the possibility of escape.
But the newcomers carry more than spectacle. Beneath the dazzle is a darker desire for revenge, and as the stoic locals turn against the intruders, old tensions begin to surface. What has been simmering for centuries is ready to break open.
