L.R. Lam’s Goldilocks begins with five women stealing the spacecraft they were trained to fly after a government determined to push women out replaces them with men. Their destination is Cavendish, a habitable planet that may offer humanity a future beyond a dying Earth.
I was gripped by the mission, but the relationship between botanist Naomi Lovelace and her formidable mentor, Valerie Black, gave the novel its real tension. Naomi owes Valerie almost everything, yet gradually begins questioning how much can be justified in the name of survival. Their closeness makes every doubt and betrayal feel deeply personal.
The science feels convincing without overwhelming the story, while the isolation of the Atalanta creates a growing sense that something is terribly wrong. Intelligent, claustrophobic and increasingly unsettling, Goldilocks is feminist science fiction that asks who gets to shape humanity’s future, and whether saving it can become an excuse for controlling it.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
On Earth, the freedoms of women are being increasingly restricted, while the need for escape grows more urgent. Valerie Black is leading the first all female mission to a planet in the Goldilocks Zone, where conditions may be right for human habitation.
For Naomi, the ship’s botanist and Valerie’s surrogate daughter, the mission is more than humanity’s last hope. It is the chance she has waited for all her life: to step out from Valerie’s shadow and do something that matters.
But once the ship is underway, things begin to go wrong. Naomi starts to suspect that someone on board is hiding a terrible secret, and the future of the mission turns unstable. Far from Earth, with time running out faster than anyone feared, survival depends on what can still be trusted, and what has already been kept from her.
