Overview

The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus follows Penelope “Pen” Winters, an eighteen-year-old arriving at the University of Edinburgh with more than studying on her mind. Raised by her single mother in Canada, Pen has long been fascinated by a photograph of her mother with a group of university friends. Convinced one of the people in the picture may be her father, she travels to Scotland determined to uncover the truth while navigating friendships, first love and the uncertainties of early adulthood.

Writing & Voice

We found Knight’s writing warm, thoughtful and easy to settle into. The prose captures the excitement and uncertainty of being young without becoming sentimental. There is a confidence to the storytelling that allows the emotional moments to develop naturally.

Content & Perspective

The novel stays close to Pen as she pieces together fragments of her mother’s past. Alongside the mystery surrounding her parentage, she experiences the ordinary upheavals of university life, building friendships and learning who she wants to become. The balance between family secrets and personal growth gives the story its momentum.

Themes

The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus explores identity, belonging, family history and the complicated relationship between parents and children. It asks how much our past shapes us and whether understanding where we come from can help us understand who we are.

What Worked

  • An engaging central mystery that keeps the pages turning.
  • A believable coming of age story full of growth and self-discovery.
  • A strong sense of place in Edinburgh and university life.

Minor Quibbles

  • Some supporting characters could have been explored more deeply.
  • The mystery unfolds at a measured rather than suspenseful pace.

Final Thoughts

What makes this novel work is the balance between its mystery and its heart. We were invested in Pen’s search for answers, but even more invested in the person she becomes along the way. It is an engaging coming of age story with warmth, charm and genuine emotional insight.
