Mathew West was born in Kent, but grew up in a small town in Aberdeenshire. In 2002 he left to study history and sociology at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating he lived in London for two years trying and failing to be a music journalist, then returned to Edinburgh. He now works as a civil servant at the Scottish Government. His first novel, The House of Footsteps, is published by HarperNorth.
