Denise Mina’s Garnethill introduces Maureen O’Donnell, newly released from psychiatric hospital and already treated as unreliable by almost everyone around her. When her married lover is found brutally murdered in her Glasgow flat, the police see Maureen and her brother as obvious suspects, leaving her to uncover the truth herself.
What gripped me was Maureen rather than the mystery alone. She is damaged, angry, funny and stubborn, but never reduced to a helpless victim. Mina shows how easily trauma and mental illness allow others to dismiss someone, while Maureen’s loyalty to people society overlooks gives the novel real heart.
Raw, compassionate and filled with wonderfully dark Glaswegian humour, this is crime fiction with far more on its mind than simply identifying a killer. Garnethill is an unsettling, fiercely human beginning to one of Scottish crime’s strongest trilogies.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Maureen O’Donnell is a psychiatric patient when she finds her boyfriend dead in her living room. The shock is immediate, but what follows is worse. Glasgow police treat her as both suspect and unstable witness, and even her mother is convinced she is involved.
Betrayed by friends and family, Maureen begins to doubt her own version of events. Memory turns slippery, fear takes over, and the simplest facts become hard to hold. Panic stricken, she starts to pursue the truth for herself, following a trail of deception and suppressed scandal that seems to have been waiting beneath ordinary life.
Then a second body is discovered. The case tightens, and so does the danger around Maureen. If she cannot reach the killer first, she may not get another chance to tell her story at all.
