On the banks of the Thames, Ann Harris’s mutilated body is found, far from the place Maureen O’Donnell last saw her. A month earlier Ann was in the Glasgow Women’s Shelter, drunk and bruised, with two broken ribs, carrying the kind of damage people learn to look past.

In the aftermath, no one seems to care what happened to her. Maureen is the only person who believes Ann’s husband is innocent, and that belief becomes a thread she cannot let go of. With her own personal life in turmoil, she runs to London and begins to piece together Ann’s final days, trying to make sense of what was done, and what was missed.

But the clock is already running. Maureen has twelve hours to put things right, and the urgency sharpens her choices. The search becomes a race against indifference as much as against a killer, and Maureen is willing to pay whatever the answer demands.
