Frankie Boyle’s Meantime is exactly the sort of crime novel I hoped he would write: filthy, intelligent, politically furious and far more moving than I expected. Felix McAveety is a Valium-dependent Glaswegian who decides to investigate the murder of his friend Marina, helped by a collection of people almost as chaotic as he is.
The mystery twists into something much larger, but what kept me reading was Boyle’s voice. Nearly every page contains a line sharp enough to make me stop, laugh and read it again, yet the humour never completely hides Felix’s grief, addiction or sense that life has stalled around him.
Glasgow feels bleak, funny and unmistakably real, while the post-referendum politics give the story genuine bite. Dark, strange and deliberately messy, Meantime is a brilliant piece of Scottish noir for readers who like their crime fiction full of ideas, damaged people and viciously good jokes.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Glasgow, 2015. Felix McAveety is a Valium addict whose life is already fraying when his best friend Marina is found murdered in a local park. He goes looking for answers, though the questions have a habit of slipping from his mind before he can hold them.
Felix gathers help from a strange and unstable circle: a brilliant but mercurial GP, a young trade unionist, a failing screenwriter, crime novelist Jane Pickford, and his crisis fuelled downstairs neighbour Donnie. Together, they are drawn into a bewildering investigation that moves through Scottish radical politics, artificial intelligence, cults, secret agents, smugglers and vegan record shops.
Set against the backdrop of post referendum Scotland, Meantime is a picaresque detective story about murder, revenge, and the blurred edges of personal and political loss.
