We found Spaceships Over Glasgow generous and grounded, capturing how music, friendship, and place shape a life without myth-making or nostalgia overwhelming the honesty.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Born the son of Scotland’s last telescope maker, Stuart Braithwaite seemed destined for a life spent searching the outer limits of sound. As a founding member of Mogwai, he would help shape one of the most influential post rock bands of the past three decades.
A modestly delinquent teenager, Stuart found little to hold his attention at school. Music, however, became everything. In the late eighties he immersed himself in alternative sounds, discovering bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and slipping into formative gigs by The Cure and Nirvana. Rock and roll became both refuge and release, complete with its early flirtations with hedonism.
Spaceships Over Glasgow is a love letter to live music and the electric communion of a great gig. It is also an honest account of life on the road, capturing the exhilaration, excess and vulnerability of touring the world with a band of glorious misfits.
