The Italian Chapel is a heartfelt and inspiring tale about people finding hope and beauty in the darkest of times.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
During the Second World War, The Italian Chapel is set on Lamb Holm, a small Orkney island that becomes home to Camp 60 and a group of Italian prisoners of war. Cut off from their country and facing cold, hunger and uncertainty, the men search for meaning beyond survival.
Among them is Domenico, a gifted artist who persuades his fellow prisoners to create something lasting. Using scraps of metal, driftwood and whatever materials they can find, they begin work on a chapel, an act of faith and defiance in the midst of captivity.
As the building takes shape, relationships form across the boundaries of war. Giuseppe, another prisoner, falls in love with Fiona, a local woman, and leaves a hidden mark of that affection within the chapel itself. The Italian Chapel is a novel about creativity, compassion and the human need for beauty, even in the harshest circumstances.
