There’s Only One Danny Garvey: Shortlisted for Scottish Fiction Book of the Year

About this book

As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.

Danny Garvey once seemed destined for something larger. At sixteen, his talent drew attention from professional clubs and the future appeared assured. Now, years later, he is back in Barshaw, the small Scottish village he never quite escaped, managing the struggling junior team he once played for.

His return carries more than disappointment. Thirteen years earlier, a single night altered several lives, and Danny has kept his part in it carefully hidden. In a place where memories linger and expectations are slow to fade, the past presses close. The chant that once followed him still echoes, affectionate and unforgiving in equal measure.

As Danny tries to hold a fragile team together, he is forced to reckon with what was lost and what might still be possible. This is literary fiction rooted in community and conscience, attentive to failure, loyalty and the difficult work of finding redemption where it is least expected.
