A tense psychological thriller in which a convicted nurse insists her confession conceals deeper hidden truths — and a true-crime writer digs into trauma, memory and guilt to uncover whether she’s a killer or a victim. Ideal for fans of dark, twisting suspense.
dispatched by Royal Mail Tracked 48
A solid thriller with a gripping concept and effective execution, yet it doesn’t fully break free from the conventions it uses. The Nurse works well as a one-sitting read but doesn’t stay quite as hauntingly memorable as its premise suggests.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Rose Marlowe tells a simple story. She is a nurse. She is a wife. She killed a patient in her care. The certainty of her confession sits uneasily against everything about her that appears gentle, composed, and ordinary.
Theo Hazel, a struggling true crime writer, is drawn to the gaps in her account. Visiting Rose in prison, he expects guilt or denial, not calm cooperation. When she admits the victim was known to her, the case begins to shift, pulling Theo deeper into a past marked by loss and careful concealment.
With each interview, Rose offers another fragment of herself. Trauma, resilience, and a version of events that grows more persuasive the longer he listens. Theo finds his objectivity slipping as sympathy takes hold, and doubt becomes dangerous.
The Nurse is a tightly wound psychological novel about trust and performance, and about how easily belief can be shaped by the stories we most want to hear.
