In the mid noughties in Renfrew and Paisley, Kirsty Campbell is twelve and starting to feel the world shifting under her feet. Duck Feet follows Kirsty and her friends from first to sixth year at Renfrew Grammar, as school days stretch into years and childhood gives way, unevenly, to whatever comes next.
The novel stays close to the texture of growing up working class in Scotland, attentive to friendship, embarrassment, loyalty, and the small dramas that can feel world ending. With humour running through it, the story also takes in drugs, bullying, sexuality, and teenage pregnancy, without turning them into lessons.
At its heart is the slow work of figuring out who you are, being pulled along by the currents of adolescence, and learning what it means to keep going when everything is changing.
