Rock Paper Scissors sends Adam and Amelia to a converted chapel in the Scottish Highlands for a weekend meant to rescue their marriage. Snow cuts them off, the doors seem to open by themselves, and both arrive carrying plans they have kept from the other.
The anniversary letters were what pulled me in most. Written across their marriage, they gradually show how affection became resentment, and how differently two people can remember the same life. Adam’s face blindness adds another unease, especially in a story where identity, recognition and trust keep shifting.
Alice Feeney makes Blackwater Chapel feel properly hostile, from the wall of tiny mirrors to the face at the window and Bob growling at things his owners cannot see. This is clever, claustrophobic psychological suspense, full of secrets and sharp reversals, but the failing marriage underneath gives the twists their real bite.
As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.
Adam and Amelia have been married for ten years. They arrive in the Scottish Highlands to mark the anniversary, drawn to the quiet of a remote place where there are few witnesses and little interruption.
The landscape offers space to reflect, but also room for doubt. As the weekend unfolds, small details begin to feel unstable, and each of them becomes newly aware of what they know, and what has never quite been said. The intimacy they share is threaded with omissions, habits of silence built over time.
Every marriage contains its private adjustments, its half truths and careful accommodations. For Adam and Amelia, those compromises have begun to harden into something more dangerous. The question of trust, once assumed, becomes uncertain.
This is a psychological thriller attentive to the fragile balance between closeness and concealment, and to the way long shared lives can still hold rooms that remain locked.
