Somewhere Else: Recommended by Miriam Margolyes

About this book

As Independent Scottish booksellers, we write all of our descriptions personally, we hope you enjoy this one.

Rosa Roshkin is five years old when her family are murdered in a pogrom. Forced to leave behind everything she knows, she carries only a suitcase of clothes and her father’s violin.

Somewhere Else follows the Judaeo-Scottish experience across generations, set against two World Wars, the creation of Israel, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It returns to womanhood shaped by rupture and survival, and to the ways a life can be formed by what is lost, what is carried, and what must be remade.

As the world shifts around her and history keeps moving its borders, the question beneath the story remains stark. How do you find identity in displacement, when home has been taken away and the past will not stay still.
