On a secluded island in the Hebrides, a gathering is called under the shadow of something unspoken. Troubled but talented young author Euan has been taken up by celebrated novelist Malcolm Furnivall, who has made him a protégé and brought him into the rarefied literary scene of the 1950s. Yet Malcolm has become increasingly isolated, consumed by work and convinced that something terrible will happen to him.
He summons his loved ones to the island and, to everyone’s surprise, asks Euan to complete his masterpiece. Soon Malcolm is found brutally murdered in his study, and his unfinished novel has vanished with him.
Cut off from the mainland, with the island’s inhabitants circling and a killer on the loose, Euan feels both Malcolm’s legacy and his own chance at greatness slipping away. He ventures into the mansion to find the missing manuscript, moving deeper into its labyrinthine rooms as suspicion tightens.
The closer he comes to answers, the more he begins to sense a different danger waiting, a fate sealed in time.
