A dark gothic retelling of a classic Charles Dickens tale, following the daughter of a jilted bride as she grows up cold, vengeful and haunted by cruelty — until a brutal choice forces her to embrace revenge. Perfect for readers who love atmospheric historical fiction with moral complexity, female agency and haunting suspense.

Estella’s Revenge is a brooding and thoughtful retelling that gives a familiar character space to reclaim her story. While the mood can be intense and uneven at times, the focus on Estella’s survival and agency makes this a compelling, if challenging, read.

Estella’s Revenge steps back into the shadows of Satis House to follow a girl shaped by neglect, bitterness, and careful design. Raised among stopped clocks and mouldering finery, Estella is taught to harden herself against feeling, to treat love as a weakness to be exploited. She senses that something in her is different, whether born that way or forged by years of emotional deprivation.
Beyond the walls of the house, the world offers little gentler instruction. Estella witnesses the routine cruelty visited on women, lessons reinforced when she is bound in marriage to the violent Drummle. Survival becomes a daily calculation, and endurance begins to look uncomfortably like surrender.
As anger deepens into resolve, Estella is forced to confront the inheritance she has been given. The novel asks whether vengeance can be an act of self possession, or whether embracing the darkness simply completes the work begun in childhood. Estella’s Revenge is a tense, inward reimagining of a familiar figure, attentive to the cost of turning pain into power.
