In Locharran, Ally McKinley is looking forward to something gentler than murder. When she hears the novelist Jodi Jones is hosting a writers’ retreat at the nearby hotel, she offers rooms at her guesthouse for some of the attendees, pleased to have the village filled with books and conversation for once.
The retreat barely begins before Ally finds Jodi strangled in the ladies’ bathroom. The shock lands hard, and the small community tightens as suspicion begins to spread among the bookish guests. As Ally brings out the cake tin and teapot and starts asking questions, a different story emerges behind the polite talk: accusations of plagiarism, infidelity, and grudges that have had time to sharpen.
In Jodi’s bedroom at the guesthouse, Ally finds a diary with pages ripped out, and the missing pieces feel as telling as what remains. Then another aspiring writer is found dead, only hours after saying she knew the identity of Jodi’s killer. The danger is no longer abstract. Someone in Locharran is determined to keep the truth hidden, and they know Ally is getting closer. With Flora at her side, Ally must follow the clues before she is written out of the story for good.
